Frequently Asked Questions

What time is check-in and checkout?
Check-in is any time after 4pm and check-out is before 11am. Details of key collection and familiarization will be sent after booking.

Do I need to hire a car?
Yes. There is so much to see and do in Dominica you will want your freedom to move about. It is a good experience to take one of the local mini-bus services while here, but it would not be an effective way to travel for all but the most hardened backpacker.

What clothes should we bring?
The weather is warm all year round. Although Dominica experiences a lot of rain (you can't have a rainforest without it) the north west coast is one of the driest areas on the island. Lightweight summer clothes are best with a light sweater or jacket for the evening. Dominicans generally dress casually and informally but do enjoy dressing up for special occasions. And don’t forget your swimsuits and sunscreen!

Do you have Wi-Fi and cell-phone coverage?
Wi-fi is available and the cell-phone coverage in Dominica is very good.

Do we need to bring repellent? Are there lots of bugs and mosquitoes?
Here you are surrounded by nature, but luckily we are not over troubled by mosquitoes. There is a short spell at sunset when they may visit but using a burning coil or some repellant will keep them away.

Can we drink the tap water at the cottage?
Yes, the water is safe to drink and meets World Health Organisation Standards. It comes from the mountain rivers and is delicious.

Where can we shop for supplies?
There are several supermarkets in Portsmouth, the most familiar will be IGA with local and imported products. For fresh fruit, vegetables and fish, the Saturday morning market in Portsmouth is a must. Try to get there early.

Are there any good local restaurants?
Yes there are some great restaurants in Portsmouth (about 10 minutes drive away). They serve fresh local fare which includes seafood, creole dishes and the national dish - callaloo soup. There are also Chinese and Italian restaurants in Portsmouth.

How often are linens and towels changed?
We play our part in the protection of our environment and do not normally change linens and towels during your stay. However if you are staying for a week and would like a mid-week change, please let us know in advance and we would be happy to accommodate you.

Is a gratuity included?
No, we leave this to your discression. Christine works hard to keep the cottage clean including being our Girl-Friday in our absence. Son is close-by to help with day-to-day life and to fulfil your requests for coconuts, for his coffee beans or fruit from our gardens. Please reward these wonderful locals as you see fit.

What is the electricity voltage?
The voltage in Dominica is 220v so Treetops has lots of 220v outlets. We have also installed a transformer and included a 110v socket four our North American guests.

Are children welcome?
Of course.

Is smoking permitted at Treetops?
No. This is a timber building and smoking is the number one cause of house fires. In addition, we do not want future guests to suffer the lingering smell of smoke. You are welcome to smoke in the garden but are reminded to dispose of your cigarette butts responsibly.
